A COLLABORATION WITH oils
Tom mixes raw oils, resins, pigments, powders and metallics to produce vibrant colors, surface textures, organic patterns and refract light. The paints are layered, applied in a sequence, to produce an alchemical effect. The painting are luminescent, crystalline and textural.
More than color; the paints hold the energy: Tom applies the paint with palette knife, brush, and sponge. He sprays, splatters, pours. scrapes and pulls the paint. The dynamic of the paint produces organic surface textures and light refraction.
The paints are a prism of color, the vibrations create a light spectrum.
TOM BOATRIGHT
Tom uses palette knife, traditional brush or trowel to pull thick paint. The paint is scraped, rolled, sprayed, pulled and poured on the canvas. Tom's technique is very experimental and emergent. It is a visionary process.
Tom's technique is experimental and emergent. He spends days envisioning the painting. He creates unique artisan oils for each series. The color palette, viscosity, metals and iridescent are added to raw oils and resins. The painting evolves in stages, layers of paint coming to life. It cannot be replicated.
artisan oils are created for each series and session.
MODERN LUXURY, LUMINOUS nature
EMOTION AND ALCHEMICAL gold
Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.
― LEONARDO DA VINCI

Tom's process is alchemical. The canvas and paints are the containers for the energy. The energy arches from the heavens and the superconscious realm of the spirit to matter and the subconscious illusive world beneath the surface. The paints have an organic and emergent nature. They have a magic of their own. The method is fluid to allow space for the unseen and mysterious.

I create oil paints with metals to produce an alchemical phenomenon.

"Crested Butte" has bronze, gold, copper, silver and fire blue. A final pour defines the landscape, modern rustic luxury.
VIBRANT PRIMARY colors
Two figurative paintings and a abstract landscape were painted for a couple in San Fransisco. They wished to have a cohesive color palette but unique composition and technique. They preferred vibrant colors with minimal metals and texture.

Tom paints an impressionistic grove of aspen, illuminated by light. An urban condo with a memory of autumn in the mountains.
CARL JUNG
The alchemical operations were real, only the reality was not physical but psychological - the rescue of the human soul.
artisan oils CREATE ORGANIC SURFACE TEXTURES
Creating his paints is an art in and of itself. The paintings are emergent as Tom's dynamic with the paints is fluid. There is a sequence and a method but each session has an element of mystery and magic. The artisan oils that he creates for each series are layered during the session and interact with each other to create surface textures, organic patterns and unique colors. There are elements that cannot be replicated.
He mixes the pigments, metals and iridescence with raw oils and resins prior to each session. A painting is the product a series of sessions or layers on the canvas: intention written, a base layer applied, the composition sketched, elements are painted in thick oils, color palette incorporated, metals and iridescence are added in a fluid session and the painting comes to life with the painting flat.
Tom uses diverse techniques. His work varies in the color palette, composition, and style. Ponds can have defined lotus or abstract flowers, distant landscapes, or a single bloom. The artisan oils are created for each series based on the vision and technique. The viscosity or consistency of the paint determines the technique.
