TOM BOATRIGHT STUDIO

A modern master's ancient method
Tom is training his youngest son, Elijah, as an apprentice. He paints in the tradition of the masters, collaborating in sessions, gaining skill and knowledge to ultimately paint his own emergent style. Painters in the High Renaissance relied on this dynamic exchange of information. Apprentices were trained in the studio, preparing paints, grinding pigments, working on sketching a form, painting a figure or directly assisting the master.
The studio process begins with the initial sketch of the composition on the canvas. The intention for the series is written on the canvas. Tom and Eli then apply water color paints to produce the desired color palette. They then begin to apply the oil paints with a palette knife and brush, layering paint with increasing viscosity, each layer produces an alchemical response.
The oil paints are created by infusing raw oils and resins with metals and pigments to create the paints for the session. Unique for their visceral effect and alchemical phenomenon, they are applied in a sequence producing crystalline organic surface textures, rich metallics and vibrant colors. The process is raw and refined. A collaboration with the paints they create.

STUDIO CREATION; SOUND AND LIGHT

Their atelier is a resonance chamber with a 4 second pure sound decay.

Organic crystalline patterns when poured or sprayed.

Paints for each series are created infusing metals and pigments into raw oil and resin.

Textural effects when applied by paint brush or palette knife.
Tom's paintings are known for their luminous effect. Whether vibrant in color or neutral in palette, there is an etheric quality to the paint. What is lost in the image at a distance is the organic, crystalline nature of the paint itself. The painting is more exquisite as you approach.
